A new layer is forming around AI agents.
It is not another model, interface, or collection of clever prompts. It is an ecosystem of skills: compact packages of instructions, resources, scripts, constraints, and standards that teach an agent how to perform specialized work repeatedly.
Vercel Labs now maintains an open tool for discovering and installing skills. Anthropic describes skills as self-contained collections that help Claude complete specific tasks in repeatable ways. Its public repository ranges from frontend design to document production and skill creation itself.
The visible story is the growing catalog.
The more important story is what the catalog makes portable.
Pattern
Until now, much of the value of AI has appeared to reside in the model.
A more capable model could reason better, write better, or produce better code. The user supplied the context each time, often through an increasingly elaborate prompt.
Skills relocate some of that value.
They encode not only what an agent should do, but how a particular kind of work should be approached: what to notice, which sequence to follow, what quality looks like, and which mistakes to avoid.
The model supplies general intelligence.
The skill supplies situated judgment.
This distinction becomes visible across the emerging ecosystem.
A discovery skill such as Find Skills helps an agent locate and assess other capabilities. It is less a tool than a gateway into the layer forming above the model.
Frontend Design and shadcn/ui or design-system skills encode aesthetic and structural discipline: typography, hierarchy, component patterns, responsive behavior, and resistance to generic defaults. They help turn "make an interface" into a more intentional practice of making decisions.
Marketing packages extend the pattern into commercial work. Implication
The first implication is that expertise becomes easier to reuse.

Access to a powerful model will become less differentiating as capable models become widely available. The more durable advantage may be the quality of the systems assembled around them:

Build across the workflow rather than inside one task. A creator might connect research-backed writing, copy editing, social adaptation, and document production. A product team might combine frontend design, a component-system skill, technical documentation, SEO, and launch communication.
Then customize.
Public skills provide useful foundations. Proprietary advantage begins when a business or creator encodes its own voice, review standards, customer knowledge, decision rules, and recurring methods.
The goal is not a larger pile of instructions.
It is a coherent system that carries context from one form of work into the next.

The deeper shift is not that agents are learning more tasks.
It is that human methods are becoming transmissible in a new form.
This creates leverage, but also a responsibility of authorship.
We will have to decide which parts of our work should become infrastructure and which should remain encounters: acts of attention, interpretation, care, and judgment that cannot be completed simply by following the method correctly.
The strongest operators will not be those who automate everything.
